Singles and doubles dominant as Nottingham gains win
            Apr. 21: Granted, beating Trenton in tennis isn’t as exciting as say, beating the Tornadoes on the basketball court.
            But when a team has lost seven straight and hasn’t won since opening day, any win is a welcome one.
            Nottingham’s tennis team got one today, taking a 4-0 win over Trenton at Veterans Park to improve to 2-7. It was the Northstars first win since defeating Hamilton opening day.
            The singles players dominated the day, as Chris White, Naseer Khan and Jaber Chaudry all won by 6-0, 6-0 scores.

Actually, first doubles Kyle Breckenridge and Shane Johnston were just as dominating as they won by the same scores. There was no match at second doubles.
Holsman wins at first singles but Steinert falls to ND
            Apr. 19:
Steinert’s Nick Holsman continued his strong senior season, taking a win at first singles 6-0, 6-1 today over Notre Dame’s Dylan White.
            Unfortunately for the Spartans, Holsman was the lone winner as Irish took a 4-1 victory. The second doubles team of Tyler Schwartz played a hard-fought match before falling, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.

Derek Shearer was one of two Spartans to win 6-0, 6-0 matches Wednesday as Steinert took a 5-0 win over Ewing (John Blaine/purchase photos from bgsportshots.com).

Gutsy three-set wins spark Spartans win over Redbirds
            Apr. 9: Coming off a close loss to Robbinsville Thursday, Steinert rebounded for its second win of the season, a 4-1 decision over Allentown today.
            Steinert had to battle for the win, as two of its victories went to three sets. At second singles, Derek Shearer beat Anthony Graci, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 in a tense battle. At first doubles, Joseph Watson and Kishan Shah topped Matt Morini and Justin Shaffer, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.
            At first singles, Nick Holsman won in straight sets, while John Zim-Tyler Schwartz did likewise at second doubles. Steinert moved to 2-3 with the win.

Doubles succes can't lift Steinert past Robbinsville

            Apr. 8: Four players were on the winning side but Steinert still fell, 3-2, to Robbinsville today.
            The Spartans doubles teams of Joseph-Watson-Kishan Shah and John Zim-Tyler Schwartz each won their matches. But Steinert was swept by Robbinsville’s upgraded singles team as the Spartans fell to 1-3.

            In doubles, Kishan Shah-Joseph Watson and Tyler Schwartz-Dan Kanoc were both victories.
                                                     * * *
       First singles Chris White took a 7-5, 6-2 win over Chadha Balkirat, but it was Nottingham's only win in a 4-1 setback to Lawrence.
        Jaber Chaudry played a storng match at third singles for the Northstars (1-2), losing 6-7, 6-3, 6-2 to Adam Cohen.

BOYS PREVIEW
STEINERT
            Coach:  Todd Jacobs, 8th season
            Last year: 10-8, qualified for states for 8th straight season.
            Home matches: Veterans Park
            Captains: Nick Holsman, Steve Shaw.
            Returning lettermen: Derek Shearer (So., singles), Nick Holsman (Sr., 1st singles), Steve Shaw (Sr., singles).
            Top Newcomers: Joseph Watson (So., doubles), Kishan Shah (Jr., doubles), Tyler Schwartz (Jr., doubles); John Zim (Fr., doubles), Jeff Moore (Sr., doubles), Christian Yi (Fr., doubles), Ajon Brodie (Sr., doubles); Dan Kanoc (Jr., doubles), Jakob Lenhardt (Jr., doubles), Scott Gandy (Jr., doubles), Nicholas Mastalesz (So., doubles), Brent Tuccillo (Fr., doubles), Chris Stull (So., doubles).
            Jacobs says: I’m looking forward to our season. Four of the top seven players graduated so there are plenty of positions for players to challenge for. We are a little inexperienced (Holsman is the exception), however, the players have been working hard at our practices and hopefully that will enable us to be competitive against other teams in the county.
(Previews for Nottingham and Hamilton will be posted when information is received)

Sunnybrae’s
sunny days
and Babe Ruth teams
keep township
in the sports spotlight
            Whether it’s 11-year-old boys on the little league field in Paramus, pre-teen girls on the World Series diamond in Florida or teenage boys on the Babe Ruth diamond in West Windsor, Hamilton Township has a rooting interest.
            While the majority of teams have played their last meaningful games this summer, three entries from the township are still bringing the bats and balls out to some of the biggest tournaments of the year.

  Fish4Scores.com will attempt to continue to bring you the results and photos of these exciting events. However, myself and Ken Weingartner are both away on vacation starting Saturday and running through Friday.
             So Ken will try and do his part from Lake George and I will do mine from Cape May. We apologize if results and pictures are posted a bit late, but rest assured they will get posted as soon as we can.
            Anyway, here’s what’s in store the coming week.
            * * *
            First off, how about those Sunnybrae 11-year-old Little Leaguers!
            Once the 12-year-old District 12 Tournament is over and the winner loses in the sectionals, little league baseball kind of takes a backseat as far as newspaper coverage goes. Sure, they’ll run the results if phoned in, but mostly Babe Ruth has taken center stage, or any 12-year-old team still alive (like Robbinsville softball).
            But I, for one, am really happy for this group of Sunnybrae kids. What they did is pretty remarkable when you think about it.
          For 52 years, the league has never won a sectional title, and now, boom! Here it is. From a team that nobody thought would even get out of pool play according to manager Greg Beyer.
            Sunnybrae has lived in the shadows of Nottingham Little League forever, it seems. So has most of the rest of Mercer County, but when a league in your same town is always earning the glory, it’s kind of tough. It didn’t help that HTRBA has had its share of glory in recent years as well.
            But this band of Sunnybrae 11s has put the league on the map during a season when Hamilton Township fell short of winning a district title in any other age group. Not only did Sunnybrae win a district, it has won Section 3.
            The states start Saturday.
            Good luck boys! Keep making us proud!

* * *
            While there is a fresh face carrying the township banner is little league, a familiar group is doing likewise in softball.
            The Hamilton Girls Softball Association 12-year-old team will be boarding a plan Thursday for Alachua, Fla., where it will begin pool play Saturday while making its third straight trip to the Babe Ruth World Series.
            Provided the plane ride goes smoothly (according to manager Frank Bennett, four girls are making their first flight!), Hamilton will be the first team to play in the showcase as it has a 10 a.m. game with the Midwest Plains champion Saturday.
            Hamilton also plays Sunday at 2 p.m., Monday at noon and Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The top three finishers in each five-team pool will form a six-team, double elimination bracket starting Wednesday.
            If history is any indicator, Hamilton should have a lengthy stay, as it won the national title in 2008 and finished third last year.
            So, not to repeat myself but, good luck girls! Keep making us proud!

* * *
            Finally, the Hamilton Babe Ruth 15-year-olds get underway in Mid-Atlantic Region play Thursday in West Windsor.
            Hamilton is attempting to win the league’s first regional title since the Hamilton Nationals won it in 1971. Nottingham won it all in 2008.
            The Switlik gang opens pool play at 4 p.m. against Frederick, Md. Hamilton wasn’t dominant in its first two rounds, as it finished second in District One, and again in the Southern New Jersey states.
            But the slate is clean and one never knows what can happen once a new tournament begins.
            So stop me if you’ve heard this one before but, good luck boys! Keep making us proud!
