Ocean Township ties Nottingham in controversial finish
Jan. 14: Nottingham played Ocean Township to a controversial 2-2 tie at Gold Coast Arena in Wall Township today, as the Spartans scored two goals in the final minute including a disputed goal with 0.7 seconds left.
After Brenden Bendorf scored twice (from Matt MacNeal and Zac Zuczek) to give Nottingham a 2-0 lead, Ocean (5-4-1) got within one with just under three mintues left.
With under one second left, Nottingham goalie Bryan Rock appeared to have the puck under his pads as a scrum ensued in front of him, which forced him and the puck into the goal. Much to the dismay of the Northstars (3-8-2), the goal was allowed to stand.
"This was still a good test for us as we move toward gaining more respect," coach Mike Bendorf said.

Guynn scores twice as Spartans tie up Princeton
Jan. 13: Steinert played Princeton to a 2-2 tie today in what Spartans coach Bill James termed “a very even game, an all-around good hockey game."
The Spartans took a 1-0 lead when Kevin DeWan set up Brian Guynn for a first-period goal. Princeton responded with two power play goals before the end of the period. After a scoreless second stanza, Guynn scored on the power play 1:08 into the third period, with Gary Napierkowski setting up the goal.
Princeton held a 20-16 shot advantage with Steinert goalie Stephen Anderson making 18 saves.

Hockey season outlooks
Hamilton
Coaches: Matt Hamilton (6th, season); Paul Vichroski (4th season)
Last year: 9-15, 2nd round Mercer Tournament.
Returnees: Taylor Glanding (Jr., F/D); Paul Mang (Sr., F/D); Shawn Hrymack (So., F/D); John Reuter (So., F/D), CJ Shultis (Sr. F); Danny Turner (Jr. F); Kyle Rogers (So. F); Jason Lane, (So, F); Richard Hauck (So. F); Kevin Dunphy (So. F); Brandon Hrymack (So., F).
Newcomers: Evan Morris (Fr., G); David Osnato (Fr. D); Sean Tohill (So. F/D); Jared Romanski (Fr. F); Thomas Tramontana (Fr. F); Brian Pietruszka, (Fr. F); Zachary Glanding (Fr. F); Joseph Olszewski (Fr. F); Charles Kirkland (Jr. F); Andrew Brachelli (Jr. G).
Hamilton says: We’re a very young team but have some talented players. Glanding, Mang and Hrymack are the core returnees who will be the team leaders both on the ice and in the lockerroom. Osnato, Romanski, Morris and Tramontana are travel players who will make immediate contributions, as well as Tohill, who’s a transfer from Notre Dame.
We should be competitive in every game this season and I think an upset or two could happen. We should be in the mix for the Patriot Division, but with so many young players it's tough to tell. Our goals are to win the division, win the Hamilton West Holiday Tournament and qualify for the state tournament. If we develop like we think we can, all of those goals are within reach.
Let’s start with: Hamilton opens Thursday, Dec., 3, vs. Ewing, 5 p.m., at Mercer Rink.
Nottingham
Head coach: Mike Bendorf (4th season).
Last year: 2-18-2
Captains: Zachary Zuczek, Brenden Bendorf.
Assistants: Matt Fleming, Richard Krieg.
Returnees: Zachary Zuczek (Sr., F/G ), Matt Fleming (Sr., D), Richard Krieg (Sr. F), Jeremy Stout (Sr., F), Brenden Bendorf (Jr., F), Bryan Rock (Jr., G), Dan Biernat (Jr. D), John Terry (So., D), Zack Renitsky (So. F). Dante Guerds (Sr.), Tyler Crosley (Jr.), David Robb (So.) Michael Lombardo (So.).
Newcomers: Justin Cappiello (Jr., F), Kyle Ballschnieder (Fr., D), Matt MacNeal (Fr., F), Rich Brihn (Fr., D), Giovanni Barone (Fr.), Scott Kiggins (Fr.), Mike Rock (Fr.)
Bendorf says: Despite losing graduates Mike Grogan (D), Mike O' Byrne (G), and Carlo DeHart (F), as well as Mike Mimmo and Dylan Breining, we return nine letterwinners and look to make a run at the CVC Patriot Crown. Bendorf and Zuczek will team with Cappiello and Krieg/Stout/MacNeal will be another line combination. Renitsky and Crosley should see time on offense as well.
The defense returns three letterwinners in Fleming, Terry and Biernat, with Ballschnieder mixing in with Brihn. Bryan Rock looks to make an impact at the goalie position.
A strong freshmen class will help to bolster an experienced team. If we can keep the shots against totals low, we should be able to compete with most teams.
(Notes: Bendorf had 26 goals and 18 assists for 44 points and Zuczek had 38 points as both were in the CVC’s top 10 in scoring last year. Bendorf is closing in on 100 points. Nottingham will appear in the Bayonne Holiday Tournament for the first time).
Let’s start with: The Northstars open Thursday, Dec. 3 with Hightstown, 3 p.m., at Mercer Rink.
Steinert
Head Coach: Bill James (12th season, 143-98-12)
Assistant: Frank Makovec (12th season)
Last year: 10-12 (ninth straight year of 10 or more wins)
Captain: Sean DeAngelo (Sr., D),
Alternate Captains: Jim Boccardo (Sr., F), Joe Welke (Sr. F).
Roster: Rob Young (Jr. G), PJ Alexiadis (Fr., G), Brandan Carter (Jr., D), Andrew Dudich (So, D), Sean DeAngelo (Sr., D), Brian Guynn (Jr., F), Anthony Jablonski (Jr., F), Kevin DeWan (Sr., D), Dylan Tallman (Sr., F), Sean Clinedinst (So, F), Joe Welke (Sr., F), Drew Inman (Jr., F), Jim Boccardo (Sr., F), Peter Pitman (Fr., D), Kevin Dey (So., F), Marc D’Andrea (F., D), Gary Napierkowski (Sr., F), Alex Verdi (Fr., F), Logan Rogers (Jr., F), Brian Cuffman (So., F), Derek Zeller (Jr., F), Carston Raab (So., D), Rob Mulcare (So, F), Tim Ziegler (Sr., G), Stephen Anderson (Fr., G).
James says: Hopefully we will be competitive with 14 letterman returning. So far we have had very good practices and great senior leadership. Our top returning scorer is Logan Rogers with 12 goals, 23 assists and 35 points (15, 28, 43 for career). Other scorers from last season are Kevin DeWan (1-13-14), Jim Boccardo (6-4-10), Brian Guynn (3-6-9), Joe Welke (4-3-7) and Gary Napierkowski (5-0-5). So far as coaches we like what we see, but we'll need to play a complete team game to accomplish our goals. We know that our guys will battle and play hard each game and that is all you can ever ask.
Let’s start with: Steinert opens Tuesday, Dec. 1 against Freehold Township, 3:30 p.m., at Mercer Rink.

Sunnybrae’s
sunny days
and Babe Ruth teams
keep township
in the sports spotlight
Whether it’s 11-year-old boys on the little league field in Paramus, pre-teen girls on the World Series diamond in Florida or teenage boys on the Babe Ruth diamond in West Windsor, Hamilton Township has a rooting interest.
While the majority of teams have played their last meaningful games this summer, three entries from the township are still bringing the bats and balls out to some of the biggest tournaments of the year.
Fish4Scores.com will attempt to continue to bring you the results and photos of these exciting events. However, myself and Ken Weingartner are both away on vacation starting Saturday and running through Friday.
So Ken will try and do his part from Lake George and I will do mine from Cape May. We apologize if results and pictures are posted a bit late, but rest assured they will get posted as soon as we can.
Anyway, here’s what’s in store the coming week.
* * *
First off, how about those Sunnybrae 11-year-old Little Leaguers!
Once the 12-year-old District 12 Tournament is over and the winner loses in the sectionals, little league baseball kind of takes a backseat as far as newspaper coverage goes. Sure, they’ll run the results if phoned in, but mostly Babe Ruth has taken center stage, or any 12-year-old team still alive (like Robbinsville softball).
But I, for one, am really happy for this group of Sunnybrae kids. What they did is pretty remarkable when you think about it.
For 52 years, the league has never won a sectional title, and now, boom! Here it is. From a team that nobody thought would even get out of pool play according to manager Greg Beyer.
Sunnybrae has lived in the shadows of Nottingham Little League forever, it seems. So has most of the rest of Mercer County, but when a league in your same town is always earning the glory, it’s kind of tough. It didn’t help that HTRBA has had its share of glory in recent years as well.
But this band of Sunnybrae 11s has put the league on the map during a season when Hamilton Township fell short of winning a district title in any other age group. Not only did Sunnybrae win a district, it has won Section 3.
The states start Saturday.
Good luck boys! Keep making us proud!
* * *
While there is a fresh face carrying the township banner is little league, a familiar group is doing likewise in softball.
The Hamilton Girls Softball Association 12-year-old team will be boarding a plan Thursday for Alachua, Fla., where it will begin pool play Saturday while making its third straight trip to the Babe Ruth World Series.
Provided the plane ride goes smoothly (according to manager Frank Bennett, four girls are making their first flight!), Hamilton will be the first team to play in the showcase as it has a 10 a.m. game with the Midwest Plains champion Saturday.
Hamilton also plays Sunday at 2 p.m., Monday at noon and Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The top three finishers in each five-team pool will form a six-team, double elimination bracket starting Wednesday.
If history is any indicator, Hamilton should have a lengthy stay, as it won the national title in 2008 and finished third last year.
So, not to repeat myself but, good luck girls! Keep making us proud!
* * *
Finally, the Hamilton Babe Ruth 15-year-olds get underway in Mid-Atlantic Region play Thursday in West Windsor.
Hamilton is attempting to win the league’s first regional title since the Hamilton Nationals won it in 1971. Nottingham won it all in 2008.
The Switlik gang opens pool play at 4 p.m. against Frederick, Md. Hamilton wasn’t dominant in its first two rounds, as it finished second in District One, and again in the Southern New Jersey states.
But the slate is clean and one never knows what can happen once a new tournament begins.
So stop me if you’ve heard this one before but, good luck boys! Keep making us proud!
