Five township boys make Prep 'A' All-State

Hun's Maximo Arduini and Peddie's Lucas Corrubia highlighted a total of five Hamilton Township residents who were named to the NJISAA 2009 All-State Prep "A" boys soccer team.
Arduini, a senior forward, and Lucas Corrubia, a junior midfielder, were each first-team selections.
Making the second-team were three Pennington players -- junior forward Nathan Bruccoloeri, senior defender Dean Psomaras and senior goalie John Ricketti.
The lone township resident to make the girls team was Peddie's Bailey Yuro, a junior defender who was a second-team pick.

Fitzpatrick resigns as Hornets soccer coach
Northstars battle to the end against Princeton
By Rich Fisher
Fish4Scores.com
            NOV. 7:
The Nottingham High boys soccer team was not about to give up its season without a fight.
Going up against the top seed in NJSIAA Central Jersey Group III on Friday – a team that had beaten the Northstars 5-0 in September – ninth-seeded Nottingham showed how far it had come in a tough, 2-0 setback to Princeton.
“We played a great game,” coach Mike Braender said. “I thought that the guys battled all game.  All I asked them to do was to go in with confidence that any team can win on any day.
“We knew that Princeton was a good team as does everyone else in the area but in the state tournament, they were 1-0 and so were we.”
The Northstars were coming off a first-round win over Holmdel, their first state tournament victory since 2001. Nottingham battled the Little Tigers, but could not tally against their sound defense and standout goalie Steven Hellstern.
Princeton’s first goal came on a deflection off the ‘keeper that the ‘Stars were unable to clear, and the Tigers defense took it from there.
“I again give a lot of credit to our seniors and captains for getting the team ready to play,” Braender said. “There was no give up in any players through the entire game. We had some chances but just couldn’t find the back of the net.”
“Arley Casteneda (11 saves) did a great job in the goal and our defense (Anthony Immordino, Kyle Monteleone, Kyle Miller, Dominic Akuffo) kept us in the game.”
Not only that, the entire campaign provided impetus for the program to move in the right direction.
“We accomplished something that hasn’t been done in eight years in boys soccer at Nottingham,” said Braender, whose team finished 10-11. “I think that this will give us a lot of confidence in the future and I also believe that we achieved more than anyone would have expected at the start of the season.”

Fitz feels Hornets a darkhorse
in CJ III tournament

By Rich Fisher         Fish4Scores.com
Nov. 2: Sean Fitzpatrick won’t apologize that his team is still playing.
Amidst some controversy this year, the NJSIAA has allowed sub-.500 teams into the state tournament this season. There are those who feel teams must at least have broken even to qualify, but Fitzpatrick is taking the opposite tact with his 7-11-1 team.
“While disheartened by how our regular season turned out, we feel lucky to get a chance to participate in the state tournament,” the Hamilton West boys soccer coach said. “Everyone is complaining about allowing more teams, but in my opinion, it doesn't hurt anyone.
“You still have to win games to be the champion. People used to complain when they added a wild card in baseball, 64 teams in the NCAA tournament, all that stuff. These are the rules and hopefully we take full advantage of them.”
Fitzpatrick’s 15th-seeded Hornets open Tuesday at second-seeded Freehold Boro. On the opposite side of the bracket, ninth-seeded Nottingham visits Holmdel for a 5 p.m. contest.
While the Hornets have struggled with consistency, their coach realizes that they can be a dangerous team if they catch fire at the right time.
“I like our chances as a darkhorse,” Fitzpatrick said. “Our low seed is not from lack of talent. Looking back, maybe our expectations overwhelmed us. Maybe I placed to much pressure on the kids as well.
“As I tell them each year though, just making states shouldn't be enough. It's not enough for the Notre Dames and Princetons of the world and that's who we want to be.”
Hamilton will depend on the scoring of Kyle Nuel and Charles Wheaton (pictured above/dennissymons.com), whom Fitzpatrick said are starting to connect more frequently now. The defense of Matt Petro and Tim Dooling has also been a key, and the injured Chris Sunkiskis got clearance to start taking gym again, which Fitzpatrick said is a plus.
“Whether he is able to play or not is to be decided,” the coach said. “At worst, he’ll be available for penalty kicks, and that’s better than nothing.”
Freehold comes from the tough Shore Conference and has had a strong year, but Fitzpatrick is holding to his claim of wanting to be this year’s George Mason.
“They have had a very good year but I'm hoping they've peaked,” he said. “With the exception of the Hopewell debacle (a 7-0 loss), we've played our best against the best teams in the county.
“When we were expected to win was when we've struggled so this is a good situation for us. Needless to say, not many people are gonna pick the 7-11-1 15th seed.”

Sunnybrae’s
sunny days
and Babe Ruth teams
keep township
in the sports spotlight
Whether it’s 11-year-old boys on the little league field in Paramus, pre-teen girls on the World Series diamond in Florida or teenage boys on the Babe Ruth diamond in West Windsor, Hamilton Township has a rooting interest.
While the majority of teams have played their last meaningful games this summer, three entries from the township are still bringing the bats and balls out to some of the biggest tournaments of the year.

Fish4Scores.com will attempt to continue to bring you the results and photos of these exciting events. However, myself and Ken Weingartner are both away on vacation starting Saturday and running through Friday.
So Ken will try and do his part from Lake George and I will do mine from Cape May. We apologize if results and pictures are posted a bit late, but rest assured they will get posted as soon as we can.
Anyway, here’s what’s in store the coming week.
            * * *
First off, how about those Sunnybrae 11-year-old Little Leaguers!
Once the 12-year-old District 12 Tournament is over and the winner loses in the sectionals, little league baseball kind of takes a backseat as far as newspaper coverage goes. Sure, they’ll run the results if phoned in, but mostly Babe Ruth has taken center stage, or any 12-year-old team still alive (like Robbinsville softball).
But I, for one, am really happy for this group of Sunnybrae kids. What they did is pretty remarkable when you think about it.
For 52 years, the league has never won a sectional title, and now, boom! Here it is. From a team that nobody thought would even get out of pool play according to manager Greg Beyer.
Sunnybrae has lived in the shadows of Nottingham Little League forever, it seems. So has most of the rest of Mercer County, but when a league in your same town is always earning the glory, it’s kind of tough. It didn’t help that HTRBA has had its share of glory in recent years as well.
But this band of Sunnybrae 11s has put the league on the map during a season when Hamilton Township fell short of winning a district title in any other age group. Not only did Sunnybrae win a district, it has won Section 3.
            The states start Saturday.
Good luck boys! Keep making us proud!

* * *
While there is a fresh face carrying the township banner is little league, a familiar group is doing likewise in softball.
The Hamilton Girls Softball Association 12-year-old team will be boarding a plan Thursday for Alachua, Fla., where it will begin pool play Saturday while making its third straight trip to the Babe Ruth World Series.
Provided the plane ride goes smoothly (according to manager Frank Bennett, four girls are making their first flight!), Hamilton will be the first team to play in the showcase as it has a 10 a.m. game with the Midwest Plains champion Saturday.
Hamilton also plays Sunday at 2 p.m., Monday at noon and Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The top three finishers in each five-team pool will form a six-team, double elimination bracket starting Wednesday.
If history is any indicator, Hamilton should have a lengthy stay, as it won the national title in 2008 and finished third last year.
So, not to repeat myself but, good luck girls! Keep making us proud!

* * *
Finally, the Hamilton Babe Ruth 15-year-olds get underway in Mid-Atlantic Region play Thursday in West Windsor.
Hamilton is attempting to win the league’s first regional title since the Hamilton Nationals won it in 1971. Nottingham won it all in 2008.
The Switlik gang opens pool play at 4 p.m. against Frederick, Md. Hamilton wasn’t dominant in its first two rounds, as it finished second in District One, and again in the Southern New Jersey states.
But the slate is clean and one never knows what can happen once a new tournament begins.
So stop me if you’ve heard this one before but, good luck boys! Keep making us proud!
